Weak Right Side Defence Indonesia Cause Failed Champion

The struggle of the Indonesian national team in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 ended wrenching. Had performed heroics to win 2-1 after trailing advance in Pakansari Stadium, Indonesia eventually have to recognize the benefits of Thailand. On the second leg final to be held at home to Thailand, Rajamangala Stadium, Indonesia defeated by a score of 0-2.

Indonesia lost to Thailand 2-3 on aggregate. Indonesia had to settle back in position two or runner-up as the final four who previously lived Indonesia in the AFF Cup. Yes, Indonesia back into the runner-up for the fifth time.

In terms of the game, Indonesia appears to be outclassed by Thailand in this second leg. Indonesia was developing the game while trying to reverse underdevelopment. While Thailand appear superior throughout the match.

Thailand back to the flagship scheme in this fight, 3-4-1-2. Tanaboon Kesarat and Pratum Chattong who missed the first leg back in defense to fill. Meanwhile in the midfield coach of Thailand, Kiatisuk Senamuang, lowering three creative midfielders, that Charyl Chappuis, Sarach Yooyen and Chanathip Songkrasin. Sirod Chattong (replacing Sarawut Sign) accompany Teerasil Dangda on the front lines.

Right Side Back Become Weak Point Indonesia

Just like when they lost by a score of 2-4 in the group stage and a 2-1 victory in the final first leg, Indonesia once again shows weakness on the right side of defense when dealing with Thailand. Two goals scored by Thailand in this fight entirely in through an attack on the right side of Indonesia.

Indonesia is making a few changes in this match. Andik injured Vermansah replaced by Zulham Zamrun to fill the flank attack. The rest, Indonesia still uses the same players as in the first leg.

However Zulham unable to improve the quality of Indonesia's defense on the right side, just like Andik. Plus Benny Wahyudi appearance that is not too impressive in this fight, the right side of Indonesia has become an easy target of Thailand.

In the first half, the statistics from Fox Sport posted Thailand attacked by the left (right Indonesia) by 54% (middle 21% and 25% right). Teerathon Bunmathan which occupies the left wing-back Thailand does stand out in this fight.

Thailand's first goal was created thanks to the sweep fachrudin aryanto who hit Sirod Chattong and lead to the goal. But before that, there was chaos on the right side of defense Indonesia so Bunmathan provide dangerous cross into the goal Indonesia

In the first picture looks Chanatip Songkrasin who received the ball cleverly directly pass on Bunmathan. From here already seen their individual errors of two Indonesian players, first by Benny Wahyudi, both by Zulham Zamrun.

Beny too rush to snatch the ball from Chanathip. Whereas in the area are Manahati Lestusen Chanathip. This resulting Bunmathan can dribble freely approached the penalty area Indonesia. Moreover Zulham too late to cover Bunmathan.

The chaos on the right side makes Hansamu Yama who should be at the heart of defense hooked to the right side to inhibit Bunmathan surging into the penalty box. But with this shift, Sirod Chattong that the first images seen guarded by Hansamu, becomes freely without escort in the second image.

Indonesia coach Alfred Riedl was aware right side of defense Indonesia is vulnerable to attack. After the break, he was entering Dedi Kusnandar to replace Benny Wahyudi who earned a yellow card in the first round.

But it did not solve the leaking of the right side of Indonesia. The panic defense when the attack Thailand Indonesia rolling into the area look. It also resulted in the second goal Thailand.

In the picture above shows three Indonesian players, namely Dedi Kusnandar, Manahati Lestusen and Bayu Pradana, tried to encircle Chanathip Songkrasin the ball. Meanwhile, Hansamu Yama was hooked to shift to the right as viewed Bunmathan freestanding.

But cleverly, Chanathip provide feedback through between the legs Dedi Kusnandar in Sirod. With Fachrudin escorting the front area of the penalty box which is filled by Teerasil Dangda, practically no player who covers Sirod. Sirod freely directing shots in the direction he likes.

Change of Strategy Riedl is Not Running Under Plan

There is a change in strategy made Riedl started the second leg of this. Although only replace Andik by Zulham, but there are changes in the role played by Stefano Lilipaly. In the first half, Indonesia seems to be a pattern 4-1-4-1 last moment; Lilipaly accompany Bayu Pradana while Manahati anchor in tow.

Image above occurred in the first half. Lilipaly visible in the middle. Meanwhile Manahati Lestusen play more inside than Bayu Pradana and Lilipaly. Zulham and Rizky Pora which fills the second wing was parallel to Bayu Pradana and Lilipaly.

Initially this scheme is quite difficult for Thailand to have three creative central midfielder. In the first 20 minutes, Thailand is only able to score two shots, both of which are not on target. Riedl is working to strengthen the defense in this match.

However, the goal Sirod make Riedl did not budge. A goal means that defeat to Indonesia for a 2-2 aggregate mean advantages for Thailand, who pocketed aggressiveness away goal. Inevitably, Indonesia should be scored. Score 1-1 to make Indonesia a champion, lost 2-1 will force the match to extra time.

In the second half, Riedl started to change its strategy. Riedl enter Eliandri Lerby replace Zulham Zamrun in the 63rd minute. The basic pattern changed from 4-1-4-1 to 4-4-2. Lilipaly plotted as a right winger.

However, this change does not change the style of the Indonesian invasion. 10 minutes later, Riedl back to try more attacking strategy by including Ferdinand Sinaga replace Rizki Pora. Lilipaly back to the middle, Indonesia using 4-3-3.
